The Sundering

The Sundering

The sky came apart over the Vale, and what poured through it did not leave. It settled. It learned the shape of the world and started wearing it.

- the only line of it anyone wrote down

You start in the Vale: a green bowl inside a mountain wall, with an waystone burning in the middle of it and something already circling the ruins on the far side. Nine other places press up against its edges - a forest that closed over itself, a tundra that buried one, a caldera that is still burning, an abyss with shelves you can stand on.

Each has its own creatures, its own weather, its own music and its own way back through the mountains. Nothing here is a menu entry. If you can see it you can walk to it, and the walk is most of the point.

What you do

Shoot things. Take their stuff. Go somewhere worse.

Eight archetypes, and they do not feel alike

Hand cannon, auto rifle, pulse, scout, shotgun, sniper, fusion and beam - each with its own recoil pattern, its own aim-down-sights snap and its own reason to exist. You start with the Dawnbreak Verdict and the Stormwright, and find the rest out there.

Every shot, reload and impact is generated in code. There is not one recorded gun in the build, and it still hits like one.

Three buttons that change the fight

Aether Orb lobs, sticks and leaves a sigil burning on the ground for anything that walks back through it. Arc Strike lunges and puts a shockwave out around you. Grapple Hook takes any piece of scenery under your crosshair and flings you past it - over the fight, behind the fight, or straight out of it.

All three are on their own cooldowns, and all three are worth spending before you need them rather than after.

Momentum is the point

Sprint with a FOV kick, slide out of it and keep the speed, double jump with real air control, land with a dip that costs you nothing, and grapple anything you can see. The whole traversal loop is built so that the player who never stops moving is the player going fastest.

Two kilometres square, no loading screens between regions, no fast travel required.

Common through exotic, off anything you kill and anything you open. Droughts have a hard ceiling - the game counts how long it has been and eventually stops asking. Three currencies, a skill tree, sixty-five written quests and fifty levels of it.

The bestiary

Twenty-five things live out here.

They hunt, they flock, they dive on you and they slam. Every region has its own, and the further out you go the less they care how many of you there are.

Two of them are not creatures, they are appointments. The Warden of the Spire has been standing in the ruins across the meadow since before you got here. The Archon of the Convergence is at the far end of everything, at level fifty, and it is the reason the sky is like that.
